A NEW

BUNDLE
Finding out about a new
addition to your family is
exciting, and how you share
the news with your other
children is important. Tact
and care are needed to
break the news in order to
avoid unnecessary stress
and tension. Jason Marcus,
Mysmartkid’s specialist
midwifery practitioner,
suggests the following
tips in order to make it
a smooth transition:

1

Take them with you to
a few antenatal visits.

2

Ask for their opinions
on names for the baby.

3

Ask them to help with
preparing the baby’s
room or sleeping area.

4

Depending on their
age, have them make
little crafts and cards
or write letters to the
new baby.

5

Start discussing rules
around the baby’s
arrival at home, for
example, that they
may only hold the baby
with permission.

Build up their systems

One issue that plagues every parent as the weather
changes is colds and flu! Children attending crèches
are more susceptible to the germs floating around, and
building their immune system is essential. Babyfoode.com
suggests this immune-boosting purée with its healthy mix
of fruit and vegetables:
4 MEDIUM CARROTS, PEELED AND ROUGHLY
CHOPPED Carrots are loaded with beta carotene, and
one of its important jobs is to support the body’s mucus
membrane, making it harder for bacteria to enter
the bloodstream.
4 APPLES, CORED AND ROUGHLY CHOPPED Apples
contain an antioxidant that helps boost and fortify your
immune system. It also sweetens the purée.
1/2 AN ORANGE Oranges are filled with vitamin C, which
helps increase the levels of antibodies released when a virus
or bacteria is trying to make you sick. It also increases
the production of white blood cells that help destroy bacteria.
4CM FRESH GINGER, PEELED AND FINELY CHOPPED
Ginger is known for its medicinal properties.
1/4 TEASPOON TURMERIC Turmeric helps boost the
immune system through its active ingredient, curcumin.
INSTRUCTIONS

1

Place the carrots and then the apples into a steamer, and steam
for 12-15 minutes or until carrots are tender and can be pricked
with a fork. Cool slightly.

2

Transfer the carrots and apples to a blender or food processor.
Squeeze the juice of the orange into the blender and add the
ginger and turmeric. Purée for 60-90 seconds or until completely
smooth. Serve as a meal for baby or spoon into reusable pouches
for older kids.
