OM Yoga UK - May 2017

(Amelia) #1
Why did you start yoga
My first experience of yoga was on a vacation to
Goa in India in 2010; being a dancer, I thought it
would be something I would like to try. Walking in the
yoga shala in silence, with just the sounds of the birds, the sun shining though the nets,
welcomed by stillness...everyone sat on their mats, present and blissful, waiting for the
practice to begin. I was hooked from that moment, knowing this was something bigger
than I ever could have imagined. It took hold of my heart, and that is where the most
wonderful journey of my life began.

How has yoga changed your life
I have fallen in and out of yoga. That first trip to India and my first experience was such
a powerful one, I found it hard to find that same place in my heart on returning to the
UK. None of the classes grasped me in the same way; something was different. I returned
to India in 2013, and once again fell in love. I knew I needed to do more, so I started
to explore yoga at home, following YouTube clips, lighting incense sticks and trying to
replicate the feelings and senses I had in India. In 2017, I took the trip once again to
India to do my teacher training qualification, in Ashtanga and Vinyasa flow. This time,
upon returning, I realised the feeling I’d been searching for all these years - the feeling
yoga in India gave me - was within me and had been all along. Yoga taught me that I am
home, home is within my heart - and this is the biggest lesson I can ever learn.

Favourite yoga haunts
Anywhere I can lay my mat and go deep within myself. My favourite moments are
outside, in the fresh morning air, the sun rising, gently warming my mat and the sounds
of nature around; this is my bliss.

Best yoga moment
I have never had a bad yoga moment, and day-by-day, the moments get better, the
things I’ve learnt about myself continue to grow, the deep connection with my mat and
the connection to my soul - this equals my best yoga moment ever.

Anything else
I am so grateful for yoga; it has changed my life in ways I never dreamed imaginable.
Breathe, surrender and let go and the magic happens. I read a quote somewhere saying
that yoga continues long after you have rolled up your mat, and this is so true. This is
my life; my life is yoga.
