During May, Thyme plants are in full bloom across the Mediterranean, the sweet fragrance
filling the air. It is one of the oldest herbs used medicinally. Thyme oil (thymus vulgaris) is
produced from the leaves and flowers and comes from the Greek meaning ‘rising cloud’ or
‘vapour’, appropriately for an oil that is so beneficial for respiratory complaints. It strengthens
the immune system and the thymus gland and helps boost the body’s defences against
respiratory infections. The warming nature of this oil helps clear congestion and break up
mucous and phlegm. Two drops of thyme oil added to hot water for steam inhalation will
open blocked nasal passages and soothe the respiratory system. Or place a couple of drops
in the diffuser in the studio to help ease breathing during practice.
With its strong antibacterial properties, thyme oil makes the perfect yoga mat or bag
cleaning spray. Fill a spray bottle three quarters with purified water and one quarter with
witch hazel, then add 12 drops of thyme oil and six drops of lavender oil. Shake well and apply
liberally to get rid of bacteria and insects.
Thyme is also used to sanctify and purify sacred spaces and cleanses not only the body
but also the mind, making it the perfect oil to use for meditation. Place a couple of drops on
a tissue, inhale and let the oil calm body and mind helping you move
through any blockages and empowering your meditation. Avoid
during pregnancy or with high blood pressure. Use in low
dilution only.
