This month, we’re all about mindfulness, with a
special report looking at a range of topics on
this modern day phenomenon that’s sweeping
the nation (starting on page 52).
The idea of paying more attention to
the present moment is integral to our yoga
practice, of course. Most yoga students will
know that bliss-like feeling of finding presence
or stillness when spending precious minutes on
the mat; it’s a place of true inner peace, when
everything seemingly falls into place.
For non yoga practitioners, however, the increasing popularity of
mindfulness – paying attention to your own thoughts and feelings, and
to the world around you – holds tremendous potential for improving
the general wellbeing of society.
While it may not be for everyone, the benefits of mindfulness are
thought to include greater calm and clarity, improving our mood and
enhancing our ability to relate to others and ourselves with more
kindness, acceptance and compassion.
At a time when mental health and wellbeing is rising to the top of
the agenda, mindfulness has a genuine role to play in encouraging us
to unplug, take a moment and open a little space from the everyday
hustle and bustle of modern living.
One keen advocate is TV comedian and writer Ruby Wax, who is
featured in our OM Meets interview this month (page 34). She’s been
dubbed a poster girl for mental health and is currently bringing her
own unique (and funny) take on mindfulness to live theatre audiences
on her Frazzled tour.
The best news of all is that yoga can give you a head-start,
introducing all of the essential features and benefits of mindfulness
at the same time as giving you a great workout, a kind of moving
meditation.
So if you’re looking to raise your game, improve your general health
and wellbeing and plug into a great new community then book into
your nearest yoga class. What you’ll learn on the mat will help you
incorporate mindfulness into your daily life, whether you’re at home
dealing with the kids, in the office or out in the car. It’s a recipe for
success: yoga + mindfulness = great things ahead.
