The month of May is a joyful time of transition, a change of season;
Kapha season (winter) officially comes to and end and Pitta season
(summer) starts.
The perfect essential oil to use to mark this change is peppermint
oil; Mentha piperita. Used since ancient times, this cooling and
refreshing essential oil is used in aromatherapy to stimulate the
mind, increase mental agility and to increase focus. It can also help
to ease migraines, headaches, sinus and chest congestion and boost
the digestive system.
To ease headaches or migraines; put a drop on your temples (be
very careful not to get any in your eyes) or put a few drops in an oil
burner or diffuser and let the aromas help clear your mind.
Peppermint oil is also great in your yoga studio as it helps
students to focus and concentrate.
Before yoga, put a drop in your hands so the essential oil is
immersed all over your hands and released throughout your practice
giving you a calmer, clearer mind.
Afterwards, try putting a couple of drops into a cup of hot water
as a refreshing alternative to tea.
Peppermint oil is non-toxic and non-irritant in low dilutions, but
sensitivity may occur from the strong menthol content.
It can cause irritation to the skin and should be kept well
away from the eyes. It should be avoided during pregnancy
and should not be used on children under seven.
