A new London conference aims to highlight how
yoga is reshaping traditional educational ideas
A
new conference is being
organised for London this
summer that will bring together
leading academics, educators,
healthcare professionals and
yoga teachers. The Instill Conference 2015
is intended to generate interest in the
practice of yoga in educational contexts,
through discussion and the presentation
of cutting-edge scientific research. The aim
is to drive future research and development
in these areas.
In recent years, developments in
neuroscience and psychology have indicated
a strong correlation between yoga and
mindfulness and improvements in individual
wellbeing. As recently as last November, the
Public Health England briefing document,
‘The link between pupil health and wellbeing
and attainment’ showed a clear connection
between positive wellbeing and educational
attainment in schools.
The Instill Conference 2015 is being
organised in collaboration with various
prominent yoga organisations, including
TeenYoga, The Special Yoga Centre, Minded
Institute, Yoga Campus, Independent Yoga
Network and Yoga United.
Key speakers include Sir Anthony Seldon, a
leading British schoolmaster who pioneered
‘happiness’ lessons at top boarding school
Wellington College, where he is master. A keen
advocate of meditation in schools, he has
practiced yoga for over 30 years, attending
Sivananda retreats in India, the US and the UK.
He is also an honorary historical adviser to 10
Downing Street.
The conference will also place special
emphasis on the views of young people,
collecting research, opinions, videos and text
messages, to highlight how yoga affects their
experiences of school.
The Instill Conference 2015 takes place on
July 13 at the School of Oriental and African
Studies, London. Tickets £60 (or early bird
£50 until May 13). For further information
