yoga for children

under their belt. To work in this field requires
not only a big heart, but also a strong one.
A brave heart that can go into the unknown,
meet a child in their space, before finding a
way forward.

The natural order
Using yoga as a tool to reach the potential
of a child with special needs is using yoga
stripped down to its barest form. The yoga
teacher learns to truly trust the system of
yoga, and allows it to reveal the path to
healing. In addition to the yoga technology,
the teacher will learn to find the keys that
unlock the unique path for each child. In this
process, the natural order of moving from the
finite (the body or mind of the child) to the
infinite (the expanded consciousness) shows
the true meaning of yoga which is to unite, to
become one.

The “how to”
This is the work of a yoga therapist. One-
to-one classes, using a specific tailor-made
programme to meet each child, allows yoga
to do its magic – although in reality, it is not
magic, but a well developed system of tools
that enhance wellbeing in a holistic and
magical way.

After an initial consultation, guided by
an extensive questionnaire, a session is
designed for the child. This session will
always be organic, evolving with the child
in the lead, and the teacher in deep
observation of what is needed. Included in
each session is:

n Beginning chant
n Speech therapy
n Breath exercises
n Eye exercises
n Yoga postures
n Relaxation
n Closing chant

There is deep healing taking place during
these sessions, but it cannot all be measured.
Some changes are obvious: like alertness,
improved sleep, positive mood change, better
co-ordination and concentration, improved
cognition and awareness after a session. And
there are also the invisible, subtler changes
like brief moments of recognition, deep
letting go during a foot massage, the child
feeling seen, accepted and safe. If you trust
the yoga, healing takes place.

What kind of yoga can we offer a child who
is locked in a world unknown to us? Or lives
in a hospital ward, unable to move? We offer
these children yoga in its simplest form – the
yoga that heals.

A brave heart
Yoga for children with special needs is a field
above and beyond the fun loving, exploration
into yoga mentioned before. It takes a
special person to work in this field, with a
recommended specialist-training programme
