Finding peace in
a stressful world.

M


any of us start a yoga
and meditation practice
to learn to find quiet,
stillness and peace. It’s
an acknowledgement that
our worlds can so easily trip over into busy,
stimulated and fast, unless we’re paying
attention to slow them down.
Whatever your body and mind are

expressing at the moment, you’re living in
the 21st century and unless you’re on a
remote island, you’re likely to be subject to
its constant information and particular strain
of demands: sitting in a traffic jam, hearing
news that your four-year-old is ill at nursery,
or dealing with a difficult boss.
All these things quickly send us into the
full body stress response – agitated, using

up energy quickly and finding that calm
place further and further away.
The stress response is in itself neither
‘good’ nor ‘bad’; it’s simply a call to
react in a heightened manner. It is
how it affects us after the event that
determines whether we call it ‘healthy’
or ‘unhealthy’. The more of our time
