MARTIAL MOVIES

Wan’s Wing

Chun to star in

short film
Hong Kong-based actor, writer and
filmmaker Vimal Vaz is putting his
love of Wing Chun kung fu into a
short film entitled Jade Dragon.
“It has a martial arts theme,
though it is not typical of the genre,”
said Vaz, a student of renowned
Grandmaster Wan Kam Leung.
“The story is about a woman who
turns to kung fu to regain her
confidence after an attack, and also
about a young female sifu who she
learns from, who goes in search of
more knowledge.”
Described by Vaz as “a personal
passion project”, the low-budget
short will be funded by the
filmmaker and will also feature
Grandmaster Wan as himself.
“My plans are to promote the
movie in film festivals around the
world and also make it available
for download,” said Vaz. “The
commercial value of short films is
almost non-existent and it is unlikely
I will recover my costs; however, the
purpose of the film is to promote
the careers and interests of all
contributors, and to tell a kung
fu movie story that martial artists
can hopefully relate to.”

Double action hit from Chan
Jackie Chan is back to his prolific best with
two action adventures just released Down
Under: Railroad Tigers and Kung Fu Yoga.
Shot in China, India, the United Arab
Emirates and Iceland, Kung Fu Yoga sees
Chan as archaeology professor Jack, who
ends up following Indian colleague Dr
Ashmita (Disha Patani) to Tibet in search of
a lost kingdom and the ice cave where its
army disappeared 1000 years earlier (a true
event according to Chinese Tang Dynasty
histories). Of course, there’s no plain sailing,
as Jack’s team encounter mercenaries
led by Randall (Sonu Sood), the direct
descendant of the lost army’s leader. During
a scuffle, one of Jack’s team, Jones Lee
(Aarif Rahman), snatches a diamond from
a mercenary, while the archaeologists are
trapped in the ice cave.
From there, it’s a desperate escape,
daring rescue and a wild chase after the
diamond through the Middle East and to
India, where Jack seeks to uncover the truth
of the Indian archaeologist. When he does,
they must return to the sacred mountain
once more, before their enemies beat them
to it...
Railroad Tigers is a classic Jackie Chan
action-comedy featuring a group of rising
stars. Set in China during World War II, it

follows a small group of Chinese guerrilla
fighters battling the Japanese invaders for
control of a crucial transportation link, the
Shandong Province railway network. Few in
number but big on knowledge of trains and
local geography, the group of lowly railroad
workers is led by head porter Ma Yuan
(Jackie Chan) in boarding trains to rob the
supplies heading to Japanese army posts.
Despite their primitive and often comical
methods, with everyday equipment like
ropes and ladders being their main tools,
the ‘Railroad Tigers’ keep humiliating the
Japanese army.
With the secret support of local
sympathisers, the Railroad Tigers grow
ever more daring in their actions against
the Japanese, ultimately agreeing to try a
second attempt at a failed Chinese Army
mission to blow up Hanzhuang Bridge to
cut off the distribution of Japanese army
supplies across China. But after the Tigers
become the target of a vendetta by local
Japnese commanders, and Ma Yuan is
captured by the Japanese and has to escape,
the mission looks ever-more impossible.
Featuring exciting fights aboard giant
steam locomotives, and some of the most
spectacular VFX to date in a Chinese film, this
one is a must for fans of classic Jackie Chan.
