There are two schools of thought when it comes to holing out. Hit it hard to reduce the break or play it dead weight. I know some players like to
see the ball hitting the back of the hole hard when they’re putting but I believe you will hole more short putts if you drop them into the cup with
a sensible pace that would only take the ball nine inches past the hole. By Jose Ferreira

I’m unsure about my hole-out pace

WHAT IF...

PLAY FOR NINE
INCHES PAST
Scientific research has shown
that speed that would take the
b a l l n i n e i n c h e s p a s t t h e h o l e i s
the optimum pace for holing a
putt. I know some people argue
that it’s easier to hit shorter putts
harder and reduce the break, but
this makes the hole smaller in
real terms and it will leave you
with the same tricky distance
back again if you do miss.

CONSISTENCY
IS THE KEY
Pace is extremely
important, even on short
putts. I don’t understand
why you would hit
shorter putts harder,
because it goes against
everything we do to
control pace on mid-
range and long putts.
Hitting shorter putts
harder makes it more
difficult to control speed
accurately on your next
mid or long-range putt.
