How to... escape every bunker
Luke Donald’s runner-up
spot at the RBC Heritage
last month was notable for
two things. First, for the
fact that victory in that
tournament somehow
continues to elude him.
Since 2009 he’s finished
2nd, 3rd, 2nd, 37th, 3rd,
2nd, 15th, 2nd and 2nd.
More notable though was
Donald’s short game. At
Harbour Town, Donald put
on a masterclass of how to
escape the sand, holing out
from everywhere, including
a brilliant birdie save on the
11th that kept him in touch
of eventual winner Wesley
Bryan. Consider it a very
timely return to form in one
of the strongest areas of his
game. He currently tops the
Tour’s sand save stat, as he
did in 2006, 2009 and 2010
- en route to becoming
world number one. This
season he boasts a 76.67
save percentage. The secret,
he says, is in his set-up...

The devil in
the detail
Meanwhile, elsewhere, Brian Gay misses
his own points chase, having also received
a medical exemption. Gay surpasses the
earnings but fails to earn the points, thus

calls the PGA Tour.
