‘Think of the clubhead ahead of

the hands in the downswing’

ANTHONY WALL

One thing that can help
every level of player is to
remember what the
clubhead is doing. It’s easy
to get caught up in body

positions and swing
thoughts, but the club is
the most important thing.
I see golfers make the
mistake of being ‘drawn’ to

the ball so their hands and
the grip end are way ahead
of the clubhead at impact.
This has a negative effect
on your swing path and

attack angle. I regularly tell
myself – and try to ‘feel’ –
that the clubhead should
always be ‘ahead’ of the
hands on the way down.

Replicate
address at
impact
The easiest way to keep
the clubhead ahead is by
thinking of your address
and impact positions
matching up as closely
as possible. This is not an
exact science because
address is stationary
and impact is a position
within movement, but
it’s a good feeling to
have. It should stop the
hands from accelerating
too far ahead because
of the ‘hit’ impulse, and
keep the clubhead on a
neutral path.
