O p e n to J o r d a n S p iet h i n 201 5 ’

A year is a lifetime
in professional
sport. Two years is
an eternity. Just ask
Wor ld No.1 D u st i n
Johnson. In the final
round of the US Open at Chambers
Bay in 2015, the American stood over
a slippery 10ft downhill putt on the
par-5 18th hole to win his first major
championship. After several agonising
close calls in the Grand Slams, it no
doubt would have been frustrating
enough for Johnson to watch his eagle
attempt slide a few feet past the hole,
but one can only imagine how he felt
when he then missed the return putt
to hand the title to Jordan Spieth.
While the media continued to
speculate whether he really had what it
took to win at the very highest level, it
is to Johnson’s credit that he was able
to walk away and reflect on the overall
quality of his play during the final
round rather than one unfortunately-
timed three-putt. In an exclusive
interview with Brian Wacker, Johnson
reveals: “I didn’t feel like I did
anything bad at Chambers Bay.
I hit all the right shots. It’s not like
I hit bad putts. Unfortunately,
those greens were real bumpy and
they were just difficult.”
A year later, Johnson drew on those

positives when he again found himself
in contention to win the US Open.
This time, despite the USGA’s best
efforts to derail his challenge, Johnson
came through, hammering home the
point that, yes, he could close out
majors with a thundering 196-yard
5-iron into three-feet on the 18th hole.
We’re thrilled to have Johnson on
our cover. In addition to talking to
him about where his career goes from
here, we highlight the five moves from
his powerful swing that you can use to
hit longer, straighter shots. Elsewhere
in our 40-page US Open preview, we
talk to the three men who designed
Erin Hills, as well as the one man –
USGA chief executive Mike Davis –
who decided to bring the US Open to
Wyoming for the first time.
The US Open used to be the most
predictable major of the year. Today,
with the USGA’s mission to bring
America’s national championship to
untried and untested venues, you never
know what you’re going to get. One
thing is for sure – it’ll be compelling
viewing. Enjoy the issue.
