ERIN HILLS EXAMINED

From an opening scoring opportunity to a very testing conclusion, we take a detailed

look at the par-72 Wisconsin layout as it prepares to host its first major championship

The Wind
Variable. Fry researched the US
Open-week weather in Erin, Wis.,
for the last five years, discovering
that the wind blew from four
directions and a couple of days from
multiple directions on the same day.
The wind velocity was between 6
and 18 miles per hour. “If there is 20
mile-per-hour wind, it can become a
comedy show or horror show,
depending on how you look at it.”

The Strategy
A drive down the left of the
fairway can cut off the dog-leg
but anything pulled or mishit
could find the wetlands. Most
players will look to play a draw
off the fairway bunkers that
cut in at around 300 yards.
