in the development of the city’s yoga scene.
“Manchester has a history of being a
creative, innovative city and this is reflected
in the current developments within the yoga
community. With new classes and studios
popping up in and around the city there is a
sense that yoga is truly flourishing; there is a
newfound curiosity for yoga and the benefits
it can bring to daily life.”
She believes this interest and curiosity is
reflected in the popularity of the centre’s
beginner’s courses which provide those who
are new to yoga with the confidence and
inspiration to continue their yoga journey.
In addition to bringing yoga to a new
audience, the studio has been sharing
some of the more therapeutic aspects of
the practice to the local audience – its
meditation and yoga for anxiety courses
have been providing students with new ways
of coping with the demands of modern life.
“There is also a sense of community
starting to emerge with different organisations
and teachers working together to establish
Manchester as a real hub for yoga in the
north,” says Duncan. “This is a truly exciting
time for yoga in Manchester and we at The Life
Centre and Yogacampus are looking forward
to playing our part in the development of the
yoga scene in the north west.”

A former DJ at the legendary and somewhat infamous Hacienda Club during the heydays
of the Manchester music scene in the nineties, it was yoga that brought Matt Ryan, now
one of the city’s most popular instructors, back from the brink. He’s now been practicing
Ashtanga for almost 20 years and teaching it for well over a decade, both in Manchester
and in Europe and even India (where he studied with Guruji Pattabhi Jois in Mysore). He’s
also the mastermind behind Yoga Manchester, which offers yoga classes throughout
Manchester (in Altrincham, Chorlton, Cheadle Hulme, Didsbury, Heaton Moor, Sale and
Withington) as well as Yoga Express (yogaexpressmanchester.co.uk), which offers short
compact city-based courses for busy people on the go, all based on the Ashtanga
tradition.
