- Clear your air Stuck in a rut? Try Lung
Ro Sel, translated as “exhaling waste wind,”
to release stagnant energy: Inhale through
your nose as you bring your hands, palms
up, from your belly to your face; exhale
through your mouth as you flip your palms
and push them back down to your belly.
“Use this breath to take the energy of the
sky into every cell of your body,” says
Lharampa Tenzin Kalden, a Buddhist monk
who hosts retreats at the hotel.
Nestled in the Alps of southwestern Switzerland, the Alpina Gstaad
resort is a sanctuary for Tibetan healing practices. Guests can relax in a
soothing Himalayan salt cave, experience alpine-herb massages, and
practice Tibetan yoga and meditation with monks who have studied
these traditions for decades. Here’s a taste of the ancient holistic
medicine on offer at this five-star getaway. By Tasha Eichenseher
- Massage away stress Crush 1 part
nutmeg and 2 parts cumin seeds. Pack the
resulting powder into a large piece of gauze,
and tie it into a tight bundle. Soak in warm
sesame oil for a few minutes, then use this
poultice to massage sore muscles, says
Antonis Sarris, head therapist at the Alpina’s
Six Senses Spa: “In the Tibetan medicine
tradition, we use natural elements to move
energy and draw out potentially harmful
inflammation and illness from the body.”
3. Drink to your health For a quick hit of
calm, make the resort’s golden latte, which
is rich in anti-inflammatory turmeric: In a
mug, combine 1 tsp turmeric powder, 1 tsp
ginger powder, 1 tsp cinnamon powder,
a pinch of black pepper, and a splash of
boiling water until all ingredients stick
together. Stir in 1 cup hot coconut milk
and 1 tsp maple syrup. Top with a sprinkle
of cinnamon. This warming tonic will set
you on a path toward serenity. RETO GUNTLI FOR ALPINA GSTAAD RESORT
