Love Scarves
During Breast Cancer Awareness Month,
fashion designer Karolina Muyinga of KARO
fashion (Nuit Jolie) and LA photographer Peter
Baratti are collaborating on an initiative to
change the world one scarf at a time. On Octo-
ber 8, the two will team up for a photo shoot
to benefit women dealing with cancer. They
will be joined by fashion designers Patricia
Fields, Jonathan Simkhai, and Gilles Men-
del who are donating couture clothing. The
shoot will launch the Muyinga’s Love Scarves
Campaign. Love Scarves gift silk headwear to
women losing their hair during cancer treat-
ments. Beneficiaries of Love Scarves include the
Roy and Patricia Disney Cancer Center funded
by Providence St Joseph’s Hospital & Founda-
tion, UCLA, and City of Hope Cancer Center.

Affordable Care Act Open Enrollment
The 2018 Marketplace Open Enrollment for
health insurance under the current law of the
Affordable Care Act begins on November 1
and ends December 15.
With changes in healthcare looming in the
Senate, it’s important to know that you can
still sign up for Obamacare, affording you
some protection until the new bill may pass.
Trump’s American Healthcare Act changes
important protections. One is allowing insur-
ers to charge additional premiums for people
with pre-existing conditions.
Any action of the AHCA bill is likely going
to happen–hard fought and slowly. Until then
the ACA is still the law.

Awareness Film Festival
Shining a Light through Cinema
In 2017, the Awareness Film Festival cel-
ebrates eight years of showcasing media that
increases our understanding of the world. This
year, the festival spans 11 days and includes
noteworthy films, world premiere films, youth
films, art, music and music videos, wellness
activities, yoga classes, award ceremonies, and
virtual reality experiences. Free screenings of
select programs will be offered at libraries in
LA and Fresno.
Awareness is honoring James Maslow for
his work bringing awareness to human traf-
ficking as well as Lisa Vanderpump for her
work to stop the Yulin Dog Meat Festival.
We asked founder Skye Kelly what inspires
her. She said, “As a filmmaker, the only films
I wanted to make are ones that bring light to
issues and would make people consider their
own beliefs and actions in this world and their
effects. Around the same time I began making
films, I also started the nonprofit Heal One
World. My passion is to offer a variety of
wellness options to people who do not have
the resources to seek them out. We needed to
raise money and I wanted our fundraiser to
be something that was impactful in itself. This
was the genesis of The Awareness Festival.”
