Yoga therapist Sarah Swindlehurst continues a nine-month exploration of the chakras

NAME: Svadhishthana (meaning ‘one’s
own abode’)
LOCATION: Sacral plexus
COLOUR: Orange
LOKA (Plane): Bhuvarloka (the etheric/
astral plane)
TATTVA (Element): Water-related to the
flow of life
MANDALA: Six petals, a circle within and
a crescent moon symbol within. The seed
sound symbol can be seen in the centre of
the mandala. The six petals represent the
frequency at which the chakra spins and
are said to be seen by clairvoyant vision:
each chakra spins faster the further up the
spine they are located. The circle represents
wholeness or totality and depicts the
principle of no beginning and no end (i.e.
time). The crescent moon relates to the stir
of creativity and the emotions a person has;
like the moon affects the ocean tides it also
affects a person’s mood and stability (also
due to the water content of a person being
about 80%).

EXPLANATION:
This chakra relates to a person’s sensuality,
creativity and the ability to flow and grow
with life (from a firm root foundation). It can
also house the emotions of jealousy and
envy when in a negative state. Sensuality
in many forms stimulates this chakra and
the desire for physical and mental fantasies
