Are Americans who practice yoga contributing to white
supremacy? According to a Michigan University professor, yes.
As reported by The Independent, Shreena Gandhi, a professor
of religious studies argues that, “[Yoga] did not appear in
the American spiritual landscape by coincidence; rather, its
popularity was a direct consequence of a larger system of
cultural appropriation that capitalism engenders and reifies.”
For Gandhi, relating to the practice on a purely physical level,
without exploring yoga’s richer philosophies, perpetuates its
“re-colonisation.” For Gandhi, attention needs to also be
brought to the cost of classes, which can make yoga inaccessible
to many, including recent Indian immigrants who, Gandhi says,
“this practice rightfully belongs.” To minimise the potential
harm of this, practitioners need to engage with the practice in an
authentic and respectful way, giving “credit where credit is due.”
