Five Things to Do to Make the World a Better Place

  1. Leave your backyard. Realize that no matter how much we want it to
be “all about me,” life has a distinctively social dimension. Get out
    “among ’em.”

  2. Make an effort to become more aware of what’s going on in the world—
but don’t get all your insight from one source. Balance Fox News with
MSNBC; spend some time with CNN and each of the network news
outlets. Everyone has a right to have an opinion, but opinion doesn’t
    always serve truth.

  3. Reach out intentionally to build a relationship with a person from
a generation other than yours. Build bridges. Find out why your
grandparents like Glenn Miller (my granddaughter discovered she loves
“In the Mood”) or why your grandkids like “metal” or “rap” without
    judging or lecturing.

  4. Take on a real learning challenge. Take on something written by a biblical
scholar or theologian (e.g., Walter Brueggemann or William Willimon).
Attend a lecture at a seminary. Stretch your mind from a theological
    perspective.

  5. Join or create a hands-on, service-oriented organization. Go on a mission
    trip. Get involved.
