Let’s play the word association game. I say “quiet time,”
you say...
Guilt.
Something I used to do.
Something I don’t do enough.
Something I don’t know how to do.
We know we should have a quiet time every day, but that
somehow leads to feelings of guilt when we don’t achieve it.
The problem is that when we feel guilty, we tend to avoid.
Have you ever noticed that? If you don’t have time for your
normal God time, you move it to later in the day or skip it al-
together. Then, the next morning, you feel so guilty about it
that you skip it again.
But there’s something more to focus on— a deeper issue
with the way we view our daily relationship with God. I pray
it will heap grace upon you and free you from that guilt.


Shift 2: Focus on Persistence, Not Perfection
We often think of our quiet time as one big chunk of an
event. That our quiet time has to be our Bible study, worship,
prayer, and everything related to God all wrapped up in one
solid hour and neatly packaged in the early morning.
But as life moves through its seasons, the perfect quiet- time
trifecta becomes more difficult to find. So we wait because
we’ve fallen for the lie that it doesn’t count if we only read one
verse. It has to be thirty minutes or an hour. We have to get
through the whole study passage for the day. We must fill out
all the pages or pray all the prayers.
But we don’t really have to do all the things; we just need
to do one thing. We just need to start somewhere. Once we
