I was in my early twenties when we
celebrated my grandparents’ fiftieth
wedding anniversary. I remember
talking to a close friend of mine at that
time and wondering whether it was
possible for people of our generation to
celebrate fifty years of being married. I
truly felt that it was a big achievement,
something impossible for people of my
generation, and definitely not for me.
To me, marriage seemed like standing
at the edge of a waterfall, imagining all
sorts of things that can go wrong.
Committing to someone for so long
is as serious as it can get.
This was in 2000. Coming back to
2017, in the Jigyasu class at The Yoga
Institute, in the month of December,
it was announced that the Institute
is looking for volunteers to commit
for the kick off for its Centenary Year
Celebrations (CYC). I did not give my
name then as I didn’t think I would be
able to commit the time for the event.
As I was coming regularly to the
Institute I kept hearing about the
various activities planned for 24th and
25th December. I had never imagined
the scale at which the celebrations
would take place. It was only when I
received the invitation card for 24th
December, did I realise that this was not
going to be some small event, it would
be a celebration at a much larger scale
and that was the first time when I felt
a tinge of guilt at not having given my
name for volunteering.
Nevertheless, I attended the special
Satsang on 24th December. And I
finally decided that I will go early the
next day to St. Xavier’s college for the
CYC and contribute in whatever shape
or form I can, if possible. The day at St.
Xavier’s was a day well spent for me.
As I walked towards the Institute
the next day, on 26th morning, for my
regular class, a lot of thoughts crossed
my mind. My conversation with my
friend about celebrating fifty years
of togetherness was the first thought
that came. Having worked in many
companies during the 15+ years of my
