ACCORDING TO THE EPISTLE OF BARNABAS

The treatise^1 known as the Epistle of Barnabas shows a Jewish community


and a Christian community in contact, competition, and debate.^2 Of the


three proposed dates for Barnabas, the time of Vespasian (69-79 CE) has


few advocates,^3 the time of Hadrian (117-38 CE) has been most popular,^4


but recently the time of Nerva (96-98 CE) has gained favor.^5 With regard


to provenance, although Asia Minor has been proposed^6 and Syria with


better reason has supporters,^7 Egypt, and specifically Alexandria, seems


more likely.^8 The author was probably a Gentile convert to Christianity, a
