BIPOC IN FIBER
Designer Jeanette Sloan has launched a
new initiative to improve diversity in the
fibre industry and to celebrate and support
the work of Black, Indigenous and People
of Colour (BIPOC).
Building on her important and inspirational
work over the past year, where she has been
raising the profiles of BIPOC makers who
have felt invisible and underrepresented,
Jeanette’s project will set up an online
resource to promote and support BIPOC
inclusion in the knitting world.
The BIPOC in Fiber website will include
a directory to make it easier for everyone
to discover the work of BIPOC designers and
yarn makers, and help festival organisers
to be more inclusive and intentional when
planning marketplaces and booking teachers
and speakers. The resource will also help
BIPOC working in the fibre industry to find
and see one another, and to pool resources
designed to improve access to opportunities.
Through crowdfunding, Jeanette has been
raising funds to support a project team, and
The Knitter is proud to be among the nearly
500 supporters of the project. We wish
Jeanette and her team every success in
continuing their vital work on developing
this essential resource.
