SANDRA NESBITT

Cramond Bag

PATTERN NOTES
All pieces are worked flat. The bag starts
with the base, then stitches are picked up
for working the front. The back is picked up
along the base then worked the same as the
front. The straps are worked in two parts,
then sewn together with an overlap.
The bag is worked on smaller needles than
usual for the weight of yarn, which along
with the slip stitch pattern gives a sturdy
fabric. Lining helps strengthen the straps.
Tip: Use iron-on adhesive between the
strap and lining fabric. This bonds the
two together, and allows you to sew
through it too.

Using 3.25mm circular needles and yarn A,

MAKING UP
Weave in ends and block gently to
measurements, following any yarn care
instructions on the ball band.

STRAPS
Join the two strap pieces together with a
2½cm overlap to form a piece 177½cm long.
Press a ½cm fold along each long edge of
the strap fabric lining. Centreing the fabric
onto the strap (it is designed not to reach
the edges), use iron-on adhesive or sew the
strap fabric lining to the strap. Tack down
the top hem of the bag on the front and
back. Pin each short end of the strap to the
short edge of the base and then up along
the sides of the bag. Make sure each side is
equal by counting the stripes as you go
along. Sew seam at the base and along the
front and back.

BAG LINING
Fold the main lining fabric piece in half
with right sides touching and sew the short
sides together with a 1cm seam allowance,
forming a cylinder. Press the seam open.
Sew the cylinder to the base lining piece
with a 1cm seam allowance.
Insert the lining into the bag with wrong
sides of the bag and the lining touching,
and the right side of the lining showing on
the inside of the bag. Using a sewing needle
and thread, tack the bottom of the lining to
the bottom of the bag along the seams. Fold
the top edge of the lining 1cm back to the
w ron g si d e s o it sit s u n d e r n e at h t h e top
hem of the knitted piece and carefully tack
the lining in place.
Sew on the press fastener centrally inside
the top edge of the bag.

SLIP STITCH patterns give a smart look
to this shoulder bag by Sandra Nesbitt.
It uses West Yorkshire Spinners The
Croft Shetland Colours Aran, which is
worked on small needles to achieve a
firm fabric. The bag and strap are fully
lined; you could add an internal pocket
using leftover fabric, as in our sample.
