W

hat is an energy vampire? Imagine this
scenario (but don’t meditate on it!):
You walk into a room, whether it is the
lobby of a yoga studio, a small cocktail
party, or your office; and someone
is talking. She or he is rambling on about an unfavourable
experience or situation they are enduring. The person is
animated, drawing attention to every word, move, and
expression, and you can’t help but pay attention. After just a
few seconds in the presence of this energy vampire, you feel
agitated, and drained of energy. By not protecting yourself,
your precious prana will continue to escape whenever you
find yourself in similar situations.

Practice the following meditation to avoid losing
your energy to a vampire.

Part One
For this meditation to be effective, you must be grounded
in your own presence. Feel both feet planted firmly on
the ground. Imagine roots traveling out of each toe and
through your heel, descending into the Earth. Allow yourself
to have a solid connection to the planet, and take your place
with confidence.

Par t Two
Create an energy boundary. Visualise a screen, bubble,
or shield protecting your heart and mind. Imagine the
negativity of a nearby vampire bouncing off your protective
coating. Whenever you feel like a ray of despair has crossed
the line, thicken the walls of your boundary. Keep practicing
until you feel unaffected, and can preserve your healthy,
positive prana.

Part Three
Now that you’re grounded and have a shield to protect
you, it’s time to shed some light on the energy vampire.
Understand that these people need healing, which is why
they crave your energy. Bring the image of a ball of light to
your heart. Shine this light toward the person in need. See it
singe their anxiety and calm their spirit. Shed warmth in their
direction so they can begin to restore their own energy, and
not steal yours.

Wherever you go, there will be people who will try to suck
you dry of prana. Don’t let them. Use this meditation to
protect yourself, and bring positive energy to the situation. It
works just like the saying goes, “The more you give, the more
you get.” This type of energy exchange will neither drain you,
nor will it take from others. It creates an abundance of good
vibes for all to enjoy.
