Nature’s Way
Turn your backyard into a pitstop for birds
and butterflies when you hang a fancy
feeder or the perfect shelter for flying bugs.
Then kick back and watch the show.
I WAS 13 IN 1947
in Southside, Virginia,
when I nursed a
fledgling robin after
itrefusedtostayinits
nest. I filled a box on
our screened porch
with cut grass and pine
needles. I named him
Tweet-tweet, and soon
he learned to recognize
my high-pitched birdcall.
Idugfreshworms
from the garden and fed
him until his feathers
grew out. Before long,
I took Tweet-tweet to
the garden to scratch
for worms on his own.
Hecouldnowflywell,
but my shoulder still
served as a perch.

That day came in early
fall, and Tweet-tweet
was gone.
The next spring, while
I was working outside,
abirdlandedonmy
shoulder. It was Tweet-
tweet. He stayed for a
few hours before flying
off, and that was the
last I saw of him. But the
memory of that small
bird and the friendship
we developed has
lasted for decades.
