SECOND TO NONE: His German
surname means “good deed” or
“beautiful service.” And in the span
of his 95 years of life, no one gave
more to the Cardinals than Albert
“Red” Schoendienst. The native of
nearby Germantown, Ill., passed away
on June 6, just as Cardinals Magazine
went to press. Over his 71 years in the
organization, Red was a World Series
champion as a Cardinals player (1946),
manager (1967) and coach (1964,
1982). He impacted countless careers
as a baseball-lifer and generations
of fans with his gentle, endearing
approachability. In our next issue,
we’ll salute Red’s 77 years in baseball
and a life lived The Cardinal Way.
