Celebrate the child
Children should be seen and heard, and above all, celebrated.
I believe children should feel wanted and loved and not anything
negative. The message in their early years carries them through life,
but when those messages are negative, they can flow deep in the
shallow waters and affect how they think of themselves forever.
I know life can be hard (trust me, my life has not been too peachy),
but because of this I work hard to help my children feel good about
themselves, and the children I work with too. Positive reinforcement
is a must.
But what is also important is self-care and self-awareness of
adults so they can deliver this. If we are angry, stressed, depressed,
unhappy or at an all-time low, we will find it hard to send out positive
vibes to our children.
One reactive negative thought has the potential to destroy a
child’s self esteem. Let’s protect them from that by working on
ourselves. To see the beauty in our young people, we must be able
to see the beauty in life. Can you see the light in a dark tunnel or a
rainbow in the downfall? If not, there is work to be done.

Adult responsibility
When we have children, we don’t just step into magic land where
everything is rosy and unicorns appear during the hard moments to
take away our pain. Nope, we have ongoing work to do.
Adults, take responsibility for your parenting. Take time to reflect,
be self-aware and keep ahead of the game. Your parenting grows
young people. This will look different to everyone, so take a moment
to consider how you do your role.
It may feel impossible for some of you, and that honesty is
appreciated. If that’s the case, consider one small step you might
take to bring a pocket of positive change to your child. It could be a
simple word of encouragement or praise that is true in the moment.
If you manage that, both you and your child will feel the afterglow.
If this is too hard, get some help. Ask other parents how they do it,
or seek out a parenting coach, or mentor for advice.

Finding the beauty
There is beauty everywhere in parenting, but sometimes it takes
a little searching to find it.
Don’t let your young ones feel unappreciated when you feel too
tired to mean it. Surrender to the moment and take a closer look
until you see one beautiful thing.
Remember that life is about love: it may be invisible or clearly
obvious, and that is all you need to see. A child who feels loved will
hold it tenderly in their heart, and that love will nourish them always.
Challenge yourself as adults to see the beauty where it may be
hidden. Today, I saw it in my mischievous girl’s bright eyes; in my
son’s gentle communication and in the soft nudges of my pup’s
nose on my knees while I work. These little moments of magic bring
beauty and when they are noticed, the feelings spread and you will
notice more and more.
Let every child in your presence feel acknowledged, and the
power of that invisible thread will weave itself through everything.
Allow yourself to see the beauty, and notice the positive change
it brings.
