Stories from around the weird and
wonderful world of yoga

Yogi bear
A grizzly bear in Alaska was pictured
recently performing what looked like
a sequence of yoga postures. The
bear, standing close to a lake, was
photographed balancing just on her back
legs while bringing her paws together in a
prayer-like pose. One of the photos also
shows the unnamed bear gazing intently
into the camera, in an almost meditative
trance. The bear was captured on camera
by Rick Elieson, 48, who took the pictures
in Kinak Bay, Alaska. He said it was rare
to see a big grizzly standing up. “This one
took it one step further with her yoga
moves,” he told local media. “It was funny.”
Wee therapy
Yoga teacher Kayleigh Oakley featured
in the press recently after she revealed
that she downs half a pint of her own
urine on waking. Oakley, 33, then dabs it
onto her skin before taking a shower. As
well as helping her achieve clear skin, she
claims it has cured a lifetime of health
issues. She has battled with a low immune
system for years, having been diagnosed
with Hashimoto’s disease at 15. “I heard
that urine can reset the immune system,
promote general good health, and is good
for the skin,” she was quoted as saying
in The Sun. “It is also an ancient yogic
technique, so thought I would give it a go.”

Employee benefits
The head of a large US corporation
explained recently how he introduced yoga
for his employees after going through a
health scare. Aetna CEO Mark Bertolini
nearly died in a serious ski accident shortly
after joining the company back in 2004. He
told Business Insider that he now wants to
improve his employees’ quality of life by
introducing yoga and meditation classes,
as well as boosting traditional benefits like
raising wages and other incentives. After
his accident and a long road to recovery,
Bertolini also stopped attending church (he
grew up a Catholic) and started reading up
on Hinduism.
