OM Yoga UK - November 2018

(Michael S) #1
Yoga champions
The Indian city of Thiruvananthapuram played host recently to the Asian Yoga Sports
Championships for the first time. It marks the eighth outing of the championships and
attracted participation from hundreds of yogis from more than a dozen countries (including
over 100 participants from India itself). Like it or not, competitive yoga seems here to stay,
with tournaments popping up all over the world, including the UK and USA. It marked only
the second time that India had played host to the Asian Yoga Sports Championships, after
Hyderabad. The first meeting of the championships took place in Thailand.

Record breaker
A Hong Kong yogi has broken the world record for holding a headstand while carrying
a staggering 50kg of weight. The city’s so-called ‘king of yoga’ Yogaraj C.P. balanced a
50kg weight while in a headstand for 40 seconds. He also, at the fourth attempt, served
as a ‘human chair’ while in headstand for his mum for 59 seconds. It resulted in two
new Guinness World Records. “I was feeling a little bit of pressure, but I was confident,”
Yogaraj said afterwards. It’s enough to make you wince...especially those of us who
struggle to hold a headstand for one second without tumbling over.
