YOGA

CHANGED

MY LIFE

Yoga helped Helena Cornes move

through a period of grief after the loss

of her partner, Brin

Why did you start yoga
I started to practice yoga religiously after my partner of 11 years,
Brin, tragically passed away at the young age of 28 in December

  1. I had been to many yoga classes before this but never truly
allowed myself to fully absorb the practice. I would turn up to
class, go through the motions and walk out thinking I had achieved
something just because I had attended.

How has yoga changed your life
When Brin died, I found myself at a complete loss, sitting in the
empty house we had just bought. I would go through waves of utter

om beginnings

sadness, anger, guilt, regret. I would spend hours crying, which
left me feeling awful. I hated feeling this way; I was used to feeling
strong, fit and healthy, having worked out and nurtured my body
with healthy foods. Now, I didn’t want to eat; I didn’t know what I
wanted to do. I bought myself a yoga mat, rolled it out and followed
a YouTube video. I told myself that for those 30 minutes, I would stop
thinking of the negative and try to allow myself to think only positive
things. I had felt the best I had felt in weeks, calmer and like I could
finally breathe. I continued to practice every single day. It was the
only part of my day that I looked forward to – the sense of relief I
got from it was what I needed to make me realise everything was
going to be okay, no matter how hard it seemed at the time.

Favourite yoga haunts
Angela Kimberley of Home Holistics planted the seed many years ago

  • her energy radiates in her classes. I am currently a fitness coach at
a brand new wellness centre, Made, located at Moddershall Oaks: the
location and studio are dreamy, with the instructors to match!

Best yoga moment
Crying, laughing and smiling to myself during practice...allowing
whatever needed to come out, to come out.

Anything else
Yoga was my saviour and I will be forever grateful for it. My wish
is to help others who are suffering. I am currently doing my 200
hour yoga teacher training with Bahia Yoga in Nottingham and
I am learning so much. I will endeavour to help others when I finally
start teaching.
