A

s a practicing nurse,
with experience in
both Cardiology and
A&E for six years
prior to starting
my yoga teacher training, I found
the stresses of 12-hour shifts
(including nights and weekends)
taking their toll. I began practicing
yoga seriously in 2008 to find some
down time and ‘realign’ myself both
physically and mentally.
The more I practiced on my yoga mat, on my days off, the more I
realised those skills were an asset to my work. I discovered those few
minutes waiting for an ABG result could be spent slowing down my
breath, finding focus back in the present. This allowed the craziness
of the workplace to be put on pause...even if only for a few moments
before things kicked-off again.
The use of breath and movement to bring about stronger,
healthier mental and physical health gradually became clearer to
me. This wasn’t something that was really being explored within the
NHS, in my own experience. By bringing small elements of meditation
and breath work into my nursing practice I was able to help patients
in tiny ways that made huge differences. For example, those who
were needle-phobic could breathe calmly and accept the blood
test/cannula they needed; I was able to assist patients in the cardiac
catheter lab feel calmer and at ease prior to their procedure.
Eventually, this led to me working almost full-time in yoga to
bring these elements of health to people to include in their everyday
lives. My ultimate goal is to help people avoid attendance in
A&E. More and more, we are discovering together just how much
can be aided – and even prevented – through the ability to move or
breathe better.

A registered A&E nurse, Wibbs Coulson first qualified as a yoga
teacher in 2014. Since then, he has set up his own company, Man-
dukya Yoga (mandukyayoga.com), taking it from one class a week in
April 2015 to being able to step back from his job at the hospital and
move into full time teaching in 2017. He is based in Suffolk.
