Bilateral relations
Yoga is going from strength-to-strength in China, bringing together two of Asia’s great
rivals. The China-India Yoga College, opened last year in Kunming, has drawn thousands of
followers to its free classes. China’s first yoga college is based in Kunming’s Yunnan Minzu
(Nationalities) University. College deputy director Lu Fang said more than 70 teachers had
been trained up and nearly 3,000 people had participated in free classes. He said more
Chinese people wanted to learn from Indian yoga masters. “They not only learn yoga
positions, but also sutras, philosophy, culture and dining habits from the Indian tutors.”

Scientific research

The Indian government has received over 600 proposals from scientists and academics
to conduct research under its Science and Technology of Yoga and Meditation (SATYAM)

programme. The scheme is aimed at encouraging scientific research on the effects

of yoga and meditation on physical and mental health and on cognitive functioning

in healthy people as well as in patients with disorders. The Ministry of Science and
Technology in New Delhi will now shortlist around 25 proposals. Organisations such

as the National Institute of Mental Health and Neurosciences have submitted bids,

according to secretary Ashutosh Sharma.

issues. The course aims to help teachers take a
flexible, intelligent approach to Yoga and Pilates,
Gyrotonics and with individual students.

A meditation for love: self-love, universal

love, any and all love. By Jill Lawson

L

ove is beautiful. It’s a feeling, an action, and a way
of life for spiritual seekers. Abundant in the human
spirit, every one of us has access to the love we
desire. Whether love is born from our hearts or
shines from the smile of a dear friend, love is
something we all need. Some say love is all we need.
At times we forget or underestimate the power of self-
love. You yourself, as much as anybody in the entire universe,
deserve your own love and affection, said Gandhi. So why do so
many of us deny giving ourselves the love we crave? We must
stop feeling as if we are not worthy, and begin to cherish the
force of love within us.
The following meditation will help you reconnect with your
inner fountain of love. Practice whenever you are in need of a
little self-love. Do it because you deserve it!

Do it now
Find yourself in a warm and comfortable place. Perhaps you’d
like to have a soft blanket around your shoulders, or a cup
of tea in hand to enhance your wellbeing. Whatever props or
objects bring you joy, make sure to have them available.
Close your eyes and take a deep breath, but not just any
deep breath. Let this inhale be the sweetest, most luxurious
breath you have ever taken. Feel its nourishing quality as it fills
your spirit with warmth and gratitude. Hear the pleasing sound
of your exhale releasing all that no longer serves you. Invite
yourself to create space in your heart and soul for love to flood
your entire being.
Now, for this to work, you must believe you are worthy of
love. Repeat the following mantra: “I open my heart to universal
love.” After repeating this phrase three times, take note of how
your body feels. Do the words bring you tension? If so, use your
nourishing breath to release it until you feel at ease. Continue
to repeat the mantra. When you feel the tickle of love in your
heart, let that feeling expand far and wide. Visualise your body
bathing in deep and true love.
Remember just how special you are. Please take the time to
love and honour your spirit every day. We are all connected.
When you love yourself, you inevitably spread love onto others.
We all need love, and indeed, love is truly all we need.

Jill Lawson is a writer and yoga teacher enjoying life on the
island of Maui in Hawaii (jilllawson.net)
