Why Hike Beneath the Trees?
We immediately feel we can breathe a deep sigh of relief when we walk
beneath a canopy of trees. And somehow we know that spending time
outside and in nature is healing. According to the teachings of Ayurveda,
being around trees offers us an infusion of prana, which is our essential
life-force.
These benefits aren’t simply folklore. Findings from a growing body of
scientific research confirm the positive effects of prana infusions and the
wisdom found in traditional teachings. It’s true! Spending time in nature,
specifically in the presence of trees, is good for you.


From Urban Parks to Wilderness Areas:
Nature is good for your health.
Research studies reveal that walks in the forest—even brief ones—have
measurable benefits on markers for health and well-being. For example,
forest walks can lower blood pressure and heart rate. These walks also
reduce tension and increase relaxation. You don’t have to go far to enjoy
these benefits.


Even walking through urban parks is demonstrated to have some of
the same positive effects on calming the nervous system, bolstering a
good mood, reducing anxiety, and improving a number of measures of
physiological function.
The practice of forest bathing (known in Japanese as shinrin-yoku)—
simply spending time in trees, without even breaking a sweat—is also
being touted for its positive effects. Popular in Asia, the idea of a walk
in the woods for the chronically stressed is gaining ground worldwide.
Some of the many documented benefits include improved immune system
function, reduced cortisol levels, and increased positive emotions and
mental states.
There are a number of places throughout California to experience the
relaxing benefits and scenic therapy of nature. We selected a few with
unique trees and landscapes that are close to urban areas, as well as
some trails that are more remote. Wherever you go, lace up your shoes
