The Desert
While we may not think of the desert first for their trees, the SoCal des-
ert regions have some of the world’s most unique trees. Located in the
high desert regions, the Joshua Tree is actually a type of yucca palm that
grows in a distinct shape and the only place in the world they are found
is the Mojave Desert. Joshua Tree National Park is full of a number of
trails (bring water and beware of the sun), anywhere in the region allows
for you to have a relationship with the Joshua Trees. Just don’t get too
close. Yucca palms are spiny and I wouldn’t recommend hugging one of

these trees.
In the Tahquiz Canyon region of Palm Springs, the native California
Fan Palm contributes to am oasis-rich habitat that is perfect for hiking.
The first time I was brought to this trail, by Native Foods Founder Tanya
Petrovna and one of my Santa Monica housemates, it felt like we were
walking through a garden of treasures. Personally, one of my favorite
places on the planet is the Palm Springs and high desert regions. When-
ever I need to be recharged, I find solace in the landscapes, the desert air,
the sun, and the trees.
