Yoga Bodies Real People, Real Stories, & the Power of Transformation

CHIN BALANCE

Jen: My son and I are similar in many ways. We
both sometimes have a low threshold for frustra-
tion. I’m the type of person who gets impatient
on long lines and annoyed at taxi drivers when
they go the wrong way. That often comes across
in my tone of voice and body language. I get over
whatever is bothering me in seconds, but I know
it affects the people around me for longer. It’s
something that I’m trying to work on.
Sam can be the same way, and this particular
day didn’t start great for us. I thought bringing
him with me to this photo shoot would help him
shake it off. Sam doesn’t do yoga, but he takes
break-dancing lessons. I knew he could do a
Chin Balance but didn’t realize he could hold it

so long. As he got into the pose, his personality
came out.
Posing together for this photo just washed
away the entire day’s frustration. Now it’s like a
whole new day for both of us.
Sam: I was tired, but I came along with my
mom, thinking, “This is going to be interesting
for her. It’s a new experience.”
My mom does yoga all the time, so I know
she’s really good at it, but I was really surprised
when she did this pose with me. When she sees
me break dance she always says, like, “Sam,
you’re so great. I could never do that.”
But most mothers can’t do poses like this. I
didn’t know she could do it. It was very cool.
