Yoga for Speech-Language Development

(Steven Felgate) #1
Yoga for Vocabulary and Linguistic Concepts 105

Summary

Yoga practice provides a context that can enhance lexical and
conceptual development in children in an engaging, enjoyable
way. Yoga practice with children led by a knowledgeable, creative
adult 1) exposes them to new words and 2) provides them with
new functions in which previously acquired lexical items are used.
These new forms and functions expand the depth and breadth of
children’s semantic and related conceptual knowledge. Through
yoga, children are exposed to a variety of nouns, verbs, locatives,
including polar opposites, attributes that code color, shape,
and numbers, as well as personal pronouns. The resource tables
in Appendices 2–6 of this book contain information on yoga
books, card decks, games, CDs, DVDs, and websites to enhance
vocabulary and linguistic concept development in children.
