(van Kleeck and Schuele 1987). Literacy socialization refers to
the cultural and social aspects of reading that children acquire by
being members of a literate society. Literacy awareness refers to
the knowledge of the linguistic code that children must master
to become literate. These interrelated aspects of development, as
shown in Figure 9.1, will be addressed in the following sections
of this chapter.

Literacy socialization


The first area, literacy socialization, includes three elements—
artifacts, events, and knowledge, which are obtained prior to
learning to read. Each of these will be described below.


Literacy artifacts


Literacy artifacts refer to representations of print that enrich
children’s environments (van Kleeck and Schuele 1987).
Examples include pictures of characters such as Thomas the Tank
Engine and logos that adorn children’s bedrooms, clothes, books,
