children’s questions and answers, which enhances overall language
learning (Ristuccia 2010). The provision of specific literacy
skill-related feedback is beneficial too. For example, instead of
exclaiming “Great job!” the adult could say “I love the way you
turn the pages in the book!” which is related to the particular
literacy event at hand.


Yoga and emergent literacy


A yoga practice presents a perfect opportunity to teach children
emergent literacy skills. Books can easily be incorporated into
yoga sessions. Lederer (2012) suggests that books with animals
or nature themes containing short, predictable lines work well.
Table  9.3 lists general books that can be used to incorporate
stories into children’s yoga practice.
