Developmental Domains


Communication


Communication refers to the process of sharing information among
individuals. This includes both infants’ intentional engagement
with another through the nonlinguistic means of gaze, gestures, and
vocalizations as would occur in a “Mommy and Me” yoga class, as well
as verbal children’s pragmatic use of language to interact with others as
would occur during a partner yoga pose.


Breath support


Breath support for speech refers to the stabilization of the body for
proper airflow for speech. Yoga poses can enhance breath support by
strengthening and elongating the trunk muscles needed for appropriate
postural alignment for efficient speech production. Breath control
for speech, a related area, refers to the regulation and coordination of
airflow for speech. Yoga breathing exercises can enhance breath control
by increasing awareness of the breath and teaching control over the
entire respiratory cycle.


Motor planning
Motor planning for speech refers to the brain’s ability to create, organize,
and execute coordinated and properly timed sequences of articulator
(e.g. jaw, lips, and tongue) movements to produce smooth, connected
