FEELIN’ THE LOVE
I’ve been reading Harrowsmith for 40 years! And I still
make bread from a recipe in an issue, I think perhaps
f rom 1976.

WE STAND CORRECTED
We received a copy of your 2019 Harrowsmith’s Almanac
in our Christmas “stocking.” Interesting reading. I
was very surprised, however, to read an editor’s note
under the tip “Come on baby, light my fire,” regarding
the repurposing of dryer lint (of all things!). Your editor
suggests that it can be put out in the spring for the birds
to use to build a nest. It may be super-soft for insulating,
but I have read in a similar magazine (it may have been
a Harrowsmith magazine, which we used to purchase
regularly) that lint should not be put out for lining nests
because the fibres are man-made (most of them) and do
not wick away moisture. When it rains, thenestwillget
wet and not dry out as quickly as it wouldifitwerelined

with wool or other natural materials. Thank you for an
otherwise interesting read.

Editor’s note: Hi Janet! Yes, I was scolded about this.
By my 84-year-old neighbour, even. It was something
we did back in the ’70s, and just as we’ve learned that
red food colouring in hummingbird food is equally
toxic, the world is learning about the dangers of dryer
lint too. Thank you for pointing out this error—we
appreciate slaps on the wrist! I guess birds now need
quick-dry material like the stuff I run in. Wick away
that moisture!
Best, Jules
