Battle of Hastings, the last
Anglo-Saxon king of England,
Harold Godwineson,
faced an invading
army led by
William, duke of Normandy,
in what is now France. Harold
was killed in the battle, and his
army was defeated. William was
crowned king of England in
Westminster Abbey that same
year, on December 25 —
Christmas day in the Christian
Church calendar.
