THE BUILD

ork began in the

cockpit area, and

irst up was the

ejection seat. This

is an ACES II and is only made

up of three-parts and is one of

the best injection mouldings I

have seen for a kit. It consists

of the main seat with sides

and headrest moulded as one

piece. To this you add the back

which ‘closes’ the seat up and

lastly, the top of the headrest.

The detail is excellent with

moulded in shoulder belts.

The only small downside is

no lap belts but to be honest

very few kits provide seatbelts

nowadays anyway and us

modellers normally buy etch

or similar to complete these.

I decided to add some painted

masking tape for the lap belts.

The main seat was painted with

Gunze Aqueous H308 FS

with cushions etc picked out

in various shades of green.

My attention then turned

to the main cockpit. This was

sprayed with the same H

colour, with the side consoles

in Revell Aqua Anthracite (a

very dark grey for good scale

black efect). The various

switches were then picked out

light grey, yellow and red. The

instrument panel was sprayed

with Tamiya XF-85 Rubber

black and then dry glossed over.

HobbyBoss provide a decal for

the instrument but most of

the dials were shown green. It

just didn’t look realistic in my

eyes plus the actual moulded

instrument panel had some nice

raised and recessed detail that

screamed to be painted. I opted

for the later and proceeded to

pick out switches in diferent

colours. I did use some dial

face decals from my spares

box which served the purpose

and gave a little realism. For

the MFD (multi-functional

display) I added some Tamiya

X-25 Clear Green to the face

to replicate that of the real

aircraft. I left this all to dry

overnight prior to assembling

and adding a wash made from

a mixture of lamp black and

raw umber thinned oil paints.

THE GUN

Next to complete was the GAU-

8/A cannon, which the whole

airframe was built around on

the real aircraft. Thoughtfully,
