Scale Aviation Modeller International – March 2019

(WallPaper) #1
ensure the paint cured fully.
The next step was to add a gloss
coat and for this I used Alclad 2
Aqua Gloss. I added a medium
coat of this through a 0.4mm
nozzle on 20psi. This dries very
quickly and can be handled in
as little as twenty-minutes.
This makes it relatively quick
to add a gloss coat to the upper
and lower sides of the aircraft
with handling. I did leave
this overnight to fully cure
as I didn’t want any potential
reactions using decal solutions.
The decal stage was next,
and I used an aftermarket
product by a company called

Monokio from Korea. These
behaved impeccably and were
nice, thin and sat into the
recesses/rivets nicely with a
little decal setting solution.
Once completed, I sealed these
in with another Aqua Gloss coat
followed by a lat coat. After
this had dried overnight, I
started the weathering process.
For this I added a mixture of
Lamp Black and Raw Umber
oils heavily thinned and used
this as a pin/panel line wash.
Once completed I thinned
the mixture again and
added a ilter wash over
most of the model. This

gives subtle
tonal colour
changes to the
paint and also
provides a weathered
appearance. I left the oils
to dry overnight and looked to
inalise the weapons and stores.
I said earlier I had glued the
required parts to make the
weapons and now it was
time to prime and paint.
I decided to paint the

bands on the various bombs and
sidewinders by using red and
yellow through the airbrush.
Once dry I added masking tape
over the colours before adding
the main colours. They were all
then gloss coated, decals added,
sealed and varnished and
inally weathered with some
oil paints. At this point I was on
the home straight and only had
the undercarriage to assemble,
gear doors, the Master Model
pitot tube and inally the
cannon gun at the front and
the build was complete.

The decals went on
without any drama
