Scale Aviation Modeller International – March 2019

(WallPaper) #1

the wings wasn’t diicult,
since the scheme I choose
required them to be covered
by decals. I decided to airbrush
an undercoat of Alclad Gloss
Black Base on all the parts,
and placed the decals over
it. Before that, I covered the
fuselage, the wheels and the
nose cone with Tamiya XF-1
Black, and the undercarriage
and the struts in Tamiya XF22
RLM 02 Grey. This colour was
closest to that seen on the
Eduard guide. Then I masked
the wheels with kit the supplied
masks and painted the tyres in
the characteristic carbonless
rubber light grey colour of. I
also subtly post-shaded the
panel lines around the fuselage
in high diluted brown in order
to break the dark tone. The
machine guns were then ixed,
before starting the irst crucial
point of the build - placing the
huge decals on the wings. To
ease this process, I cut them
in several strips and placed
them one after another. They
itted perfectly on the central
part, but I had to cut them
on the rounded edge to avoid
any wrinkles. Adding the rib
stripes wasn’t so easy, because
they are all oversized. So, I
adjusted them one by one - not
a complicated task but a time
consuming one! All the other
decals went on very well and
itted perfectly inside the
panel lines with a
drop of Micro Sol.
Then came the
second crucial
step - adding
the struts and the
undercarriage. I choose
to start with the cabane
struts, and then added the
wing struts and the upper wing.
Even after several dry-its
the upper wing seated on the
central struts without touching
the outer ones. So, I carefully
removed and iled them, and at
the second attempt, it worked!
Fortunately attaching the
undercarriage was easier. The

last part of the painting process
was to add a coat of Alclad Matt.
Then I added the propeller and
the tail in both, painted in a
wooden shade and added the
rigging, helped by etched
parts dedicated to
ix them into place.
Once a few inal
parts had been added
(tubing from the engine
to the radiator, the
exhaust pipe painted

in rust, and the mirror),
the model was inished.

CONCLUSION
This kit doesn’t show his age,
and I was really pleased to add it
to my collection. In my opinion,
this model is recommended for
those who had some experience
in working with etched parts,
which I found essential to
elevate the quality of the kit.
Nevertheless, the Albatross D.V
will give you the opportunity to
add a colourful model to your
shelf, something which is quite
rare with modern aircraft!
