Scale Aviation Modeller International – March 2019

(WallPaper) #1

the wings must be thinned a lot. The tabs on
the empennage are much too thick for their
respective slots on the vertical units. It is
better to remove them. Also, both canopies
it perfectly. With all main airframe parts
glued together, joint lines sanded smooth
and some fragments of panel lines restored,
I masked the canopies and painted the
whole aircraft with Tamiya White spray
primer. As the proposed painting scheme is
dull, I decided to go for more colour here and
painted undersides Tamiya Orange. After
the paint was dry, I masked undersides with
tape and painted upper surfaces Tamiya
IJN Green and left it to dry overnight.
Next, I gave whole airframe a coat of gloss
transparent lacquer in preparation for
decaling. There are only two Hinomaru
and a table with yellow background to
dealt with, so it takes no time. The red
turned out to be a bit transparent, so I
suggest putting circular masks in the
places where Hinomarus should go before
painting the model. After the decals were
dry, I sealed them with a coat of Matt and
started installing all the remaining parts.
To inish my ‘Ohka’, irst I glued
the resin bumper that I painted black

beforehand, and next the landing skid
assembly painted grey. In the instructions
there is a scheme suggesting that there
are six small lap actuators, but after
consulting my references, I decided it would
be too troublesome to measure and add
them there, so I used the very same parts
instead as the balance weights/actuators
on the empennage. I deepened a bit the
holes for wing supports and actuators and
installed them all with drops of CA glue.
Next, I brush painted them orange and dark
green appropriately. I manufactured the
pitot probe from a piece of thin hypodermic
needle, glued it in place and brush painted
a section of it green. Finally, I attached the
tiny tailwheel and the dive angle indicator
in front of the plane, both painted black.
I decided to construct a ground handling
dolly too, manufacturing the wheels
from slices of a black thick sprue. When
I removed masks from the canopies, I
considered my model inished, assuming
that it represents the airframe that had
not been in use when the War was over.

CONCLUSION
The diiculties with construction were
only caused by its tiny dimensions (when
inished, it spans almost four inches and
is exactly three and a half inches long).
Most of the parts are just very small, but
on the other hand, almost everything
its perfectly (save the above-mentioned
locating tabs). Two separate canopies
make it look strange enough, but if you
(like me) paint undersides with IJN orange
trainer colour, it is just eye-catching!
