industry made things exactly
the same during the WW2
era so practically every Fiat
G.50 difered from each other
in some details. The SBS kit
refers to it as they provide
the parts for these small but
noticeable diferences even for
the two Finnish planes. The
part breakdown is somehow
reminiscent of the Hasegawa
approach so you can make
several sub variant by replacing
some parts i.e. the vertical in,
upper fuselage, gun fairings etc.
The engineering is clever
and apart from the diferent
parts the breakdown is quite
simple, for example the
wing is in one piece so the
fuselage/wing assembly is
fool proof. As on the earlier
SBS kits all parts have slots
and alignment pins or tabs
making the whole build easy.
I spent an evening carefully
cleaning up all the resin parts
(also it is good to wash the
part with some detergent to
rid of any mould separator)
and started the build as usual,
with the interior. You start by
building up the sidewalls, the
instrument panel and then
the cockpit loor with the seat,
rudder pedals, control stick
and some other parts. The loor
inserts into the fuselage from
below and its exceptionally.
But I struggled with the photo
etched parts as they are really
tiny and delicate. You have to
bend the lower Instrument
panel to shape and test itting
this part is essential. SBS have
rendered the complicated
Italian harness beautifully but
it’s not an easy task to make
it right because partially You
have to insert it after all parts
are in place. It took me some
time and several trials to igure
out the best approach despite
the quite good instructions.
I am that type of modeller
who doesn’t really care for the
manuals (Hey, I know better
than the designer, right?).
The next part to add is the
bottom part of the fuselage,
this is the only part, which
caused me some problem
as the part is somehow too
thick and doesn’t it well
out of the box. I suggest you
sand it down a bit and adjust
it to carefully because the
bottom of the fuselage is lat
and it surprisingly iddly to
sand it to conform perfectly,
ask me how I know that.
The wing itself its very well,
while the nose is a multi part
fair that also its together well
and now you are practically half
done. I had to carry out some
adjustment to the tail part,
again nothing serious it is just
This was a nice and smooth build that
seems have raised the bar for small scale
limited run production kits
