automations aswell, triggering when

Does the upgrade include the
usualcamera tweaks?
Absolutely. Apple has gone big on
cameras with its new iPhone 11range. The
standard handset has a dual-sensorrear
camera that can take wider shots with its
120-degree lens, while the front-facing
True Depth camera is ableto capture
slow-motion selfies. Meanwhile, the
iPhone 11 Pro and iPhone 11 Pro Max have
telephoto cameras. To that end, iOS has
been upgradedto get the most from the
hardware, such as a newPortrait Lighting
effect called HighKey Light Mono that
places a subject on a white background.
It’s also possibleto virtually move the
lightingto brightenface s, smooth skin
and sharpeneyes.

So I’ll get much better photos?
That’s the aim. Infact, the Photos app
has also been given a majoroverhaul –by
removing clutter, such as duplicates, and
lettingyou jumpto days, months and
years, browsing your images is now much
easier. It also provides a great set of
editingtools – with filters and fine-tuned
adjustments fromexposure, highlights
and shadows toblack point, saturation
and vibrance, your images should shine
from the screen.Tapping the altered
image letsyou instantly view the original
and you caneven use thetools on videos,
which can be cropped androtated. It ’s
boundto become the editingtool of
choicefor iOS users on the go.

Will iOS 13keep me entertained
as well?
Sure thing. Apple Arcade, which is now

available via iOS 13, letsyou playover
100 gamesfor £4.99 per month.You can
even connect a PlayStation 4 orXbox
wirelesscontroller. A subscription can be
shared with upto five family members
and titles includeLego Brawls and
Beyond a Steel Sky. Apple TV+ also
launches on 1 November, also£4.99 per
month, though it’s not specificto iOS 13.

Phew! And what about the phone
calls?
iOS 13 letsyou make andreceive phone
calls onyour iPhone as normal but there
is a newfeature you can activate that will
block incoming calls from unknown
numbers. Siri looks throughyour Mail
and Messages appsfor contactsto allow
through and iOS 13 also takes into
account numbersyou’ve recently dialled,
which should help cut down on

nuisance calls. See ourfeature on page
48 for more about blocking spam calls.

And is iOS 13 private and
secure?
When iOS 13was released, private
securityexpert JoseRodriguez noted
that the operating system could expose
your contact detailsby bypassingFaceID,
a passcode orTouchID.This flawwas
fixed with iOS 13.1 and the upshot is that
iOS is more private with bettercontrols
over your location and a new Sign In
With Applefeature that usesyour Apple
ID to authenticate third-party accounts
with the optionto keep your email
address private – so,rather than having
to give awayyour own email address,
Apple provides arandom ID or email
address instead.

As well as a newversion of iOS, Apple

in favour of three new apps:
