Replace File Explorer with

a superior alternative

Tablacus uses breadcrumb-style navigation in the address

bar,^1 asyou’dexpect. Click the sidewaysarrows^2 to

select next and previous locations.You can also click the

Down arrow^3 tojumptothe most useful locations.To

navigatethroughTablacuseven more quickly, click the Double

Folder icon^4 toadd a tree-view side-panel.^5

OpeningTablacus presents afamiliar sight –atfirst glance,

there’s littletodifferentiateit from File Explorer.The main

pane displaysa list offolders, files and shortcuts.^1 Across

thetop,there are buttonstojump back,forward and up

throughfolders,^2 then an address bar^3 and a Filter field^4

for searching afolder’scontents.

Tablacus’ mainattraction is its abilitytoopen locations in

new tabs.Tostart, click the ‘+’ nexttoyour current tab.^1

Alternatively, right-click a file location and select ‘Open in

new tab’.^2 Tabs are gatheredatthetop of the main pane.By

right-clicking these tabs,you can close the tab, close other tabs

and close all tabstothe left and right.^3

The other highlight ofTablacus is its inclusion of add-ons.

These createnewwaystouseyour fileexplorer –for

instance,byaddingcolourstofiles based on when a file

was created or accessed, or using theweb-like mouse gestures.

The toolcomes equipped with afew already – view theseby

opening theTools menu^1 and selectingAdd-ons.^2

he best anyone cansay aboutWindows’ built-in

File Explorer is that it does its job,making it easy to

find filesand foldersand look aroundyour hard drives.

But there are no bells and whistl es, and navigation remains

as basicas it ever has been –‘Openin new window’ is about

as sophisticated as it gets.

Tablacus is a lightweight and superior substitute

for Windows File Explorer.The layout is similar, but the
